History

War Memorial in Dharamshala was built in 1972 to commemorate the soldiers who lost their lives in the Indo-China war of 1962, the Indo-Pakistan wars of 1947, 1965, and 1971, and the UN peacekeeping missions in Korea and Congo.

The idea for the War Memorial in Dharamshala was first proposed by Brigadier Khushwant Singh, who was the commander of the 9 Infantry Brigade stationed in Dharamshala. He felt that there was a need for a memorial to honor the soldiers who had sacrificed their lives for the country and to provide a place for their families to come and pay their respects.

The War Memorial in Dharamshala was inaugurated on October 7, 1972, by Lt. General T.N. Raina, who was the then-Governor of Himachal Pradesh. The inauguration was attended by several dignitaries, including military officials, politicians, and members of the public.
